Counselling involves discovering the depth of one’s stories through careful conversation.  Some of the best conversations I’ve ever had have occurred next to a fire. Firelight seems to possess the ability to draw out wisdom, memory and truth. It calls us to reflect upon and contemplate the stories that give meaning to our lives. Firelight, too, evokes a spiritual presence–of ritual remembering and connecting to the depths of our being.

When I think about firelight, I also think about the hearth…today, we’d probably say the kitchen table. It’s a practical place where ‘stuff gets done’… where meals are prepared and the challenges of the day are managed. Firelight requires tending.
